TESTIMONIALS

Students

"I owe Rick a lot credit for encouraging me to pursue a potential career in writing music for film when I was 17. That was 16 years ago and I now have dozens of film music credits under my belt with a well established foundation as a composer. I always think back to how much inspiration I derived from him. You can't go wrong with Rick, he is a one of a kind music teacher."
Ben Euerby, Composer

When I signed my first major record deal with EMI music it was because of a demo that I recorded in my home studio. I first learned how to record my own music as a teenager in a music composition course developed and taught by Rick Lingard. The tools and skills that I acquired under the instruction of Rick have opened up many doors for me in the professional music business today. I am now writing, recording and producing music on a daily basis using the same techniques and principles that I learned under Rick Lingard
Shawn Hook (recording artist/Juno nominee/TV composer)

Rick Lingard was my first real music teacher and without his inspiration and influence I would not be a professional musician today
Clinton Swanson (band leader/writer/arranger/teacher)

“Rick Lingard inspired, mentored and believed in me as a musical father figure. He has a heart of gold, and I am extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to study under him as a student, and as a friend. Rick is truly inspirational!"
Bryden Chernoff, Drummer & Percussionist, Toronto, Ontario.

"Rick is without a doubt one of the most inspirational, passionate, and well educated instructors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. To this day I often reference my classes with Rick which have in no doubt aided my career as a whole. It was a pleasure to have him as an instructor, but even greater as a mentor.”
Ken Kabatoff - Producer - Savela/Kabatoff Productions

“Rick was my music teacher from grades 7-12 with classes ranging from regular music class to concert band and music composition. He always inspired me to do my best and reach further than I thought I could in my abilities. Rick made music fun and exciting and always had an ear to listen when needed. By far, He was my favorite teacher.”
Marie Lerch (Winlaw, BC)

"I was part of Rick's music program in the late 1980s. His passion for music education, fun, and rigorous discipline (they can all co-exist) pulled the best from all of his students. He passed on his appreciation for art and effort, showing that it's cool to challenge yourself and work hard to be better at something. My only lasting memories from those days are of music: rehearsals, live shows, band trips, competitions, and great friends."
Romeo Graham, Ottawa, Ontario (industrial designer)

“Rick Lingard’s music program was the highlight of my years at Mt. Sentinel School. His musicianship, skill, and love of music played a huge role of modeling and inspiration for me as a young artist. As a student in Rick's program, I freely explored all facets of music: performance, recording, composing and conducting. Thanks to Rick’s encouragement and dedication, his learner-centered approach, plus his huge wealth of knowledge and experience, I blossomed into a successful and inspired professional musician!”
Zoey Wren, Singer, Composer and Recording Artist

“Rick Lingard is a great teacher among teachers. There are a few people that I remember as great teachers that educated and inspired and for me Rick is at the top of that list. I think if you do a little research on Rick you'll find hundreds of former students that are in the music field. Great player, great teacher, great guy... If you are going to learn, learn from someone who has those qualities...”
Chris Perra (Toronto drummer/engineer: )

I was privileged to have Rick as my high school music teacher and after-school jazz band instructor at Mt. Sentinel in '89. He is the kind of instructor who not only teaches skills, but also nurtures and inspires through his own personal and musical passions. I can trace my ongoing love of jazz to his encouragement. Rick is one of the rare instructors who combines high standards with promotion of otherwise hidden talents
Christopher Yungblut, M.A., BSW, RSW

"I feel fortunate to count myself amongst Rick's former students, as a trumpet player throughout high school - Rick's passion for music is matched only by his capability to teach. Thanks to Rick's outstanding instruction and mentorship, I have continued to play music as a member of various blues bands and enjoy playing music with my kids."
Leif Nygren, M.Sc., P.Eng.

“Rick Lingard is the reason that I've learned to effectively play six different instruments after only four years of study. To this day I continue to learn and grow as a musician.”
Kevin Wasilenkoff (South Slocan, BC)

David Sinclair - studio and live guitarist, composer, producer and former guitarist for Sarah McLachlan

I have had the great pleasure of playing music with Rick Lingard in a few different contexts over the past decade. If you have heard him play alto saxophone, then you know him to be a New York quality soloist living in the Kootenays. This is really just the beginning of his skill set. What Rick truly excels at, is bringing together large numbers of people to form professional quality bands to support local large-scale theatre performances. His ability to teach, arrange, encourage get the most out of these bands is true testament to his patience, positivity and skill
Rich Rabnett - Nationally acclaimed guitarist/composer

Rick Lingard was teacher collegue of mine for a number of years and I always found his work ethic to be top drawer. He is very passsionate about teaching music and student develpment. He always achieved significant results, and was well respected by both peers and students. In short, Rick is an excellent teacher
Mr. Shannon Sternloff

“Rick Lingard is one of the most engaging and inspiring educators I've seen work. The kids are enthusiastic to play for Rick because he shares with them his musical wisdom and excitement for the music and they learn to perform with the enjoyment for the music that's infectious. I first met and played with Rick at Western Washington University when we were both playing in the number one big band. Rick was lead alto and led the section with the same musicality, excitement, and humour that he has in his classrooms. We also played in an R&B/pop band which played nightclubs and festivals in Vancouver and all over Washington.”
Paul Baron: professional trumpet player for 30 years in the studios of Vancouver and Seattle for hundreds of jingles, soundtracks and records, major rock acts like Aerosmith, and in Broadway pits both locally and on international tours.

“Rick Lingard is one of my favourite musicians. I have performed with him many times and am always blown away by his professionalism, creativity and musicianship. He is a warm and giving musician and a lot of fun to be around. Rick, I love you! I mean it.”

“My association with Mr. Lingard is as a colleague and also in my capacity as a music adjudicator. Mr. Lingard is in my view an accomplished and experienced teacher and musician. He has much to offer anyone who has the privilege of being his student in music, either from the theoretical or the performance perspectives. I recommend him in other words.”
Dr. Dennis F Tupman - Retired adjudicator, teacher, arts administrator, advocate and past president of CMEA

Educators

“I have been fortunate to work with many of the top music educators in Canada, but my "teaching" light did not fully turn on until I had the opportunity to work under Rick at Mount Sentinel Secondary School. In addition to the many important musical lessons I learned along the way, he taught me that a personal connection and deep respect for each and every student was essential to the learning process. It is a lesson that I still carry with me every day.”
Gordon Wolfe: Principal Trombone, Toronto Symphony Orchestra Brass Faculty, Royal Conservatory of Music Brass Faculty, University of Toronto

"Rick Lingard is by far one of the best educators I've met in nearly 30 years of College teaching. Rick has taught at all levels; seemingly effortlessly. He inspires each and every one of his students; not only by his plethora of knowledge, but by instilling in each and every one of them, a belief that; if they only apply themselves, they can reach any musical level they can dream of."
Cheryl Hodge, former professor, Berklee College of Music, former faculty, Voice Dept., Selkirk College.

“I have known Rick for over 30 years and first met when we attended Western Washington University. We performed in many ensembles together and he was always a joy to work with. I became a full-time musician after graduation and worked for 12 years in various musical settings including Television appearances, scoring and performing for movies, appearance on Much Music, and performances across Canada and in the USA. I have continued working as a professional musician on a part-time basis since becoming a school teacher.
When I became a music teacher, I encountered Rick at various music festivals in the USA and Canada. I saw Rick as an inspiring teacher to many of his students. He has always taken the extra time and care to nurture their musical growth. Rick has the skills and knowledge to inspire musicians of all ages.”
